Back to the Bible For Worship

David M. Bonner

Sometimes today people design worship, or so it seems, to please people. God is the object of our worship, and worship should be designed to please God. The only way we can know what God wants us to do in worship is to go to His Word. 1Cor.2:11 states, "For who among men knoweth the things of man, which is in him? Even so the things of God none knoweth, save the Spirit of God." This scripture proves NO ONE can know what God thinks any more than one can know what a man thinks, without him telling you. God ONLY tells us what pleases Him through the BIBLE, Jn.16:13; 2Tim.3:16-17. If our worship is a combination of what man wants AND what God wants, then we show we have just as much respect for man as we do for God. If, however, our worship is TOTALLY regulated by God through the Bible, then we show we respect God. Jesus stated in Jn.4:24, "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth." Spirit is the right attitude in worship. Truth is according to the Bible, Jn.17:17. We should study our Bibles to know how God wants us to worship. In studying the Bible we find five acts we are to do in the assembly. (1) We can take the Lord's supper, 1Cor.11:20-34; Acts 20:7. (2) We can give into the treasury, 1Cor.16:2. (3) We can sing, Eph.5:19; Col.3:16. (4) We can pray, 1Cor.14:15-16. (5) We can have preaching (Acts 20:7) and be edified by the Word of God. The scriptures given state that two of these acts, the L.S. and giving, are tied to the first day of the week, Sunday. The other three are not limited to Sunday.

Did you ever notice that some churches take the L.S. on days other than Sunday? We know of no Scripture for this. Ever notice that some take a collection on days other than Sunday? We know of no Scripture for this. Ever notice that some have music other than singing? We know of no Scripture for this. Ever notice some praying through beings other than Jesus? We know of no Scripture for it. Our plea is BACK TO THE BIBLE in Worship and in all things, Col.3:17.
